Today is the Big Day.

The days and weeks grow upon the commander, filling him with a profound sense of “What the fuck has happened to my life?!?!” So, I’m sorry for the lack of posting. I am pulled in various directions at various speeds, and I find myself variously intrigued and saddened by the changes.

My time, you see, is no longer really my own.

But, that’s okay. I’ll survive.

South Dakota for Barack Obama

Today is the Big Day! By that, of course, I mean, that the Montana and South Dakota Democritic Primaries (no, that’s not a typo!) are under way. While I am glad we have finally reached the end of the primary season, the outcome here in South Dakota is as predictable as predicting that water will be wet. The majority of SD’s “Democrats”, you see, at least the vast majority of those over the age of 40, are really moderate conservatives. And by “moderate” I mean, “slightly left of hardly anything”. And by “slightly left of hardly anything” I mean, “they’d never vote for a woman if their lives depended on it, and would only vote for a black guy if it meant making sure that a woman wouldn’t be elected to office.”

Which is not to impugn the dignity or intelligence of Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, our single Representative in the House. But she is, after all, just one voice among hundreds. Presidentin’ be a whole ‘nother thang.

All that to say, even without Hillary supposedly conceding tonight (it’s about damn time, Senator!), I sincerely doubt she’d ever have had our handful of delegates anyway. Those are the unfortunate facts out here where people proudly wear their “Rush Rules” t-shirts as representatives of organized sports committees while interacting with foreign national players.

Just sayin’. And while, as a 40-something Democrat living in Sioux Falls, I don’t fit the gross generalization I provided above, she still wouldn’t have had my vote anyway, based on her personal merits. Because I believe things like personal merits do matter.

So, it’s basically over, even before we had the chance to sing the final number here in South Dakota. That’s okay. I’ve been too busy to help out much anyway.

Moving forward, though, once Senator Obama is formally announced and the country can get back to the inherent simplicity of just two real candidates (Nader who?), I’m going to start digging into the doings of my favorite little scab on herpes-infested pimple of right-wing politics here in South Dakota, and that is the Abstinence Clearinghouse. Pun totally intended, by the way. Because, with another election now looming in the near future, the likes of my favorite duplicitous trollop, Leslee Unruh (see photo at right, then go wash your eyes), are no doubt going to claw their way to the surface once again. Because inflicting a failed, unpopular, illogical worldview on the rest of the country IS a religious thing, and it IS a political thing, and it IS the sum and total of what they know how to do: that is….to act duplicitous.

O wait, it’s not an act.

The Author Profile: i write things. sometimes not too poorly, even. i photograph things. i don't capture them, but i render how the appeared to me, or perhaps how i might have seen them if i'd been looking in a different way. i don't believe in finalities, and new beginnings are old hat with me. i am not what i appear to be, or even what i think i am. i am, in a nutshell, a nut. eat me, or feed me to an elephant.
