Laptop computers are replacing desktop computers for a number of qualities including
mainly better chips, lighter components, rechargeable batteries, and fast processing
capabilities. Although laptop batteries allow one to use it on the go yet at the same time it
is perhaps the only Achilles’ heel of laptops for they start losing their storage energy with
the passage of time thus lasting only for a few minutes.
Among others, the two major factors that cut short the life of laptop batteries include
resource hungry applications and careless management on part of the user. The charm
of laptop computers is lessened when you need to take an extra battery in your bag or to
look for some power outlet to charge it up. Here are some useful steps that will help you
maximize the performance of your laptop batteries.
Use Operating Programs Efficiently
First of all, defrag your laptop’s hard disk on regular basis. This process will help your
hard disk work efficiently to locate scattered data and as a result it will work faster.
Thus the faster the hard disk the lesser load will be on the laptop batteries. It is accepted
that the effect of this scheme is minimum but when it goes hand in glove with hard disk
maintenance, it works a great deal in the long run.
Second, decrease the contrast level of your screen and increase your battery’s
performance. There are some laptops, available in markets, which come with cooling
system that need to be switched on so that it may consume less energy. Another way to
increase the efficiency of battery is to set up the power option in windows control panel
at ‘max battery’ for maximum effect.
Third, shut down all those programs that are not crucial and are running in the
background such as I-tunes, Desktop Search etc. Since they put extra load on hard disks,
they need to be closed down when you are on your battery.
Careful Management is Necessary to Increase Battery’s Performance
First, shut down extra devices like USB device, WiFi when they are not needed because
they usually drain down the laptop batteries. It goes without saying that they take their
energy from batteries and when laptops are running on batteries, they will definitely
decrease the performance of batteries.
Another precautionary measure to be taken is to keep your laptop, especially battery’s
metal contacts, clean. Since blocked air vents force the computer to generate more heat, it
resultantly reduces the life of the battery. So it is better to clean the laptop batteries with
a cloth moistened in rubbing alcohol and keep the environment around the laptop clean to
block the entry of dust.
Third, do not use your laptop under high temperature such as under direct sunlight or
inside a closed car. Undue temperature also kills off the life of a battery.
And finally, use your laptop batteries after charging them at least twice or thrice a
week. Keeping them dormant also depletes their performance. However, if you don’t
want to use it for sometime, remove it from the laptop and store in a cool place. Also
prevent your battery from memory effects; it means keep it fully charged and then fully
